說話是最自然、最純熟的表達方式，所以文章要寫得自然流暢，必須從說話習慣中汲取經驗，進一步錘鍊出好的文字表達方法。作文和說話是分不開的。半世紀以來，談到指導中學生作文，我們最直接聯想到的人，就是葉聖陶與夏丐尊兩位大師。這是因為他們對二十世紀中學國文教育的貢獻最多，所提示的作文指導也最有效。至今中國大陸仍每年舉辦全國性的「聖陶杯中學作文比賽」。
