收集在本書中的全是小說的評論，其共同之處是所寫多是一九四九年以前中國人的苦難。只有兩篇是寫一九四九年到目前的文壇情況。作者以近距離看著這些有血有肉的書中人物歌哭中華民族的共同苦難，並試著找出這特殊的時代性和種族苦難的意義和希望。
