齊邦媛教授以研究的態度，發抒今昔之感、理想與現實差距之感、對人類前途的瞻望與憂慮，以鼓舞臺灣的創作者，希望他們發出更響亮的聲音。雖然本書評論的都是多年前的小說集，但好的小說可以打破時代的藩籬，帶給新一代不同的視野與想像。讀小說有助於認識人性，而讀這本文學評論，更使我們洞察人生。
