《老子》是東方文化的優秀代表，是中國哲學的寶貴遺產。兩千多年來，《老子》中耀眼的思想已經滲透到中國人的血液中，《老子》中的格言警句已經成為膾炙人口的行動格言。老子是西方人最感興趣的哲學家之一，從十六世紀開始，西方人把《老子》翻譯成拉丁文、法文、德文、英文等、據西方學者統計，從1816年至今，西文版的《老子》已有250多種，如今幾乎每年都有一到兩種新的譯本問世。
