Sports Teams
Talent in academic studies and sports are equally valued at Ying Wa. Students are encouraged to join different sports teams that they can display talent and interest in to enrich their secondary school life.
Aside from the original 6 sports teams at Ying Wa, a new team, the Lacrosse Team, has recently joined the Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Swimming, Table Tennis and Volleyball Teams. Most team members are recruited at the beginning of S1 and their skills are further honed through years of team training. While training can be tough and tiring at times if it clashes with academic studies, the team spirit and friendships forged along the way are definitely rewarding.
There are new experiences for sports team members every year. For instance, training camps, competitions and exchange tours, both in and out of Hong Kong, are held. Due to such intensive and eye-opening activities, team members’ skills are sharpened through learning from one another and friendly matches with other countries’ teams. Such precious opportunities allow their sense of belonging and team unity to be fostered. This can be shown in their victory in various inter-school competitions, with new heights and pride brought to Ying Wa.
Sports Day
The Athletics Meet is usually held in the first term and is an important event to showcase house spirit. As S1 students’ first whole-school event in their secondary school life, it is usually when they feel welcomed and integrated into their own house. Their high-spirited cheering plays a large part in motivating schoolmates to strive for excellence in competitions.
It was certainly a pity that the finals of the Athletics Meet were cancelled in 2019 as well as the Graduation Cup and cheering dances rehearsed by S1 girls. In a twist of events, S6 students held the Graduation Cup at their school picnic in January 2020. The spirit of Ying Wa was demonstrated through these simple actions – though life can be uncertain at times, it is a constant reminder that friends are by our sides and we can still create wonderful memories together.
Swimming Gala
Every year, usually in March, hundreds of Ying Wa girls gather in high spirits at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Park Swimming Pool for a day of fun and excitement. Gifted swimmers are always waiting to break records.
In the 2019-20 school year, the Swimming Gala was unfortunately called off due to the school suspension brought about by the coronavirus. While it certainly came off as a disappointment to many, the Inter-house Committee, Tetris’ logo designing competition, Viveco, which was held 3 months before the Swimming Gala, still captured schoolmates’ passion and dedication to their respective houses as they all strove to earn house points with their remarkable designs. Their enthusiasm must certainly be praised, and Tetris must also be thanked for organising such a meaningful activity to spice up schoolmates’ school life.
Inter-class Sports Competitions
The annual inter-class sports competitions organised by the Sports Committee are a marvellous way to promote class unity and the importance of healthy lifestyle. This year (2020), in Confianza, with separate matches for junior and senior forms, the competitions were filled with excitement and anticipation as classes struggled to be the winner. In the end, the contests were a wonderful way to let schoolmates get away from their hectic academic lives and to unleash their energy.
Outstanding Achievements
With the addition of new sports teams, Ying Wa’s athletes are striving hard to reach new heights. They are flourishing under the guidance of teacher advisors and coaches. Ying Wa girls could not be more proud of our sports teams and their devotion.
