The 120th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service

The 120th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service was held on October 17 at the Silcocks Hall to celebrate God’s guidance over Ying Wa in the past 120 years.

Among the honorable guests was Rev. Lee Ching Chee (李清詞牧師), the first female pastor ordained in Hong Kong. Rev. Lee has a long-standing relationship with Ying Wa as she has been a student, teacher, vice-principal, school council member, school supervisor and chaplain. To begin her sharing, she chose Revelation 21:5 “Behold, I make all things new!” from the Bible as 2020 is a unique year to Ying Wa. Not only is it a year to celebrate our 120th Anniversary, but it is also a year mixed with blessings and ups-and-downs. However, one can remain joyful to be a part of God’s new creation if one always looks up to Him. Ying Wa will no doubt be filled with more blessings, peace and happiness in the years to come.

Our Principal, Mr Kwan Hon Cheung Francis, thanked everyone for taking part in the service, face-to-face or online. He was grateful that God sent our former Principals to Ying Wa to enlighten our heart, soul and the spirit of “to serve but not to be served”.

Release of Album Entitled “Space for Transformation – The Redevelopment Years”

Dear alumnae and friends of Ying Wa,

The school redevelopment has travelled a decade-long journey, full of twists and turns, ups and downs. But all the challenges were worth it. The magnitude of the project was unprecedented, so were the infinite opportunities and hopes brought to us. In them, I see God’s blessings. Miracles seemed to always appear at the right time when we needed them most.

The essence of this unusual journey is now captured in an album entitled “Space for Transformation – The Redevelopment Years”. While this album records the redevelopment process and introduces the architectural concepts behind the exceptional campus design, it also delves into the Christian background and mission of Ying Wa and how this history will serve as a compass for future development of the school. The album has taken us 6 years to plan and one full year to write and execute, amidst an uneasy year marked heavily by social and health challenges.

Sincerely,
Francis Kwan
Principal

Open Prayer Meeting 2019

After a long journey, Ying Wa has eventually embarked on a new page of its history in mid-March with the “Big Move” from the decanting site of Sham Shui Po back to our home – the Robinson Road Campus. With God’s guidance and the diligent work of the Ying Wa family, especially the Moving Back Team, lessons resumed smoothly on 25 March 2019 in the new campus. To express our gratitude to the Lord, an Open Prayer Meeting was held on 13th April 2019. Members of the Ying Wa family were invited to praise the Lord for His guidance and blessings throughout the whole redevelopment project.

A New Page

After a long journey, Ying Wa has eventually embarked on a new page of its history in mid-March 2019 with the “Big Move” from the decanting site of Sham Shui Po back to our home – the Robinson Road Campus.

Our new campus provides state-of-the-art technologies and an ideal spacious learning environment. We will certainly use them to the best advantage. Yet, what we treasure most is not the glamourous campus, but the all-round, Christian education that we provide – nurture the young minds our inherited core values and equip them to transform, to reach new heights and to meet the challenges of the contemporary society.

YWGS Fundraising Concert - $780K Raised

With the massive support of a 500-strong audience, the first ever fundraising concert of Ying Wa Girls' School was held successfully on 22nd April. Around 150 students and 80 alumnae performed a repertoire of over 20 works of varied genres and in different languages.

Initiated by our Music panel chairperson, the concert assembled Ying Wa musical talents of all ages to contribute to a new Robinson Road campus. It garnered overwhelming support from students, alumnae, parents, teachers and philanthropists, and added HK$780,000 to the Redevelopment Fund.

The whole school was moved by the passion and grateful for the magnanimity on display that evening. Nothing touches the soul better than the beauty of the arts, and it was fitting that we had a communion with God through music in the China Congregational Church of HKCCCC.

School Redevelopment Fund-raising Initiative
YW Girls x Chocolate Rain

Not everyone has the chance to study at our decanting site, but all can now own a collectible from this special period of our school's history.

We are delighted to present a new collection of school souvenirs.  Adorned with colourful illustrations, they elicit fond memories of the Sponsored Walk and the Famine Lunch, two highly cherished traditions passed down from multiple generations of Ying Wa girls.  They also offer a glimpse of the school's transformation from Robinson Road to Sham Shui Po, where we stand united and undaunted despite the challenges posed by the redevelopment project.  It is this strong sense of togetherness that makes the design unique as keepsakes and gifts.

These mementos are jointly designed by our talented students and local artist and founder of Chocolate Rain, Miss Prudence Mak.   In addition to being a new fund-raising drive, the artistic collaboration aims at inspiring students to pursue their dreams with determination and creative vision.

Don't miss the chance to share our vision to build a school of the future.

Steps of Faith

Development on the new school design

Some 50 parents and alumnae attended the Consultation Session with Ying Wa Community on 23 July 2011 where they met our project consultants and exchanged views with the architect on the general blocking and design approach, and matters of heritage preservation. After the presentation by the consultant, participants had break-out session for further discussion. Views were collected for inclusion where feasible and appropriate for the next stage of design development. We expect to hold another round of consultation in the coming months to keep the Ying Wa Community abreast of the development. Below is the Abstract taken from the summary report of the consultation on 23 July:

The majorities in the Redevelopment Consultation agreed with the blocking and general approach of design in the Presentation and also opined that there were improvements in the design development after the TFS stage. There was no adverse comment on the design to be further developed. The full in-situ preservation of the Kindergarten Block was also agreed by the majorities.

Proceeding to the next stage …….

The School is pleased to learn from the Education Bureau that the proposed redevelopment project has now passed the first stage of the government’s Resources Allocation Exercise (“RAE”). This means we are allowed to proceed to pre-construction preparation that includes engaging consultancy services to work on the new school design.

What are we anticipating from now?

  1. to engage architectural and associated consultancy services under the requirements and advice of the Education Bureau and relevant authorities to start the pre-construction planning work
  2. to plan and conduct consultations with the stakeholders on the actual design of the new campus, roughly to commence by early 2011
  3. to bid in the second stage of the RAE next year (June-October 2011) to upgrade the project with a view to seek the Legislative Council’s funding approval (failing in the bid means the project will have to be delayed for one year or more)
  4. to be ready to show financial proof of the School’s ability to pay for the non-subvented portion (ie. any extra, above-standard provisions that we intend to build in the new campus) shortly after the release of the RAE result about October 2011, assuming success in the RAE bid (financial proof is required before formal submission to the Legislative Council)

While we are grateful for having arrived at the present stage – impossible without the generous and timely support of many, we are realistic about the challenges ahead. The Steering Committee, and all subcommittees and task group (Building, Fundraising, Communications, Prayers, and Financial Management) will continue to work faithfully and diligently to bring forth the project to each critical step.
