Sharing Session on Teaching Programming by YWGS teachers and student

Mr. Tang Kam Hon, Mr. Leung Kam Wa and Poon Wing Sze (6C) were invited by Education Bureau to share the experience on enhancing students' learning in programming held at Pui Ching Middle School on 3rd November 2016.

Mr. Tang shared about the goals and objectives of establishing the computer programming team in the school in 2009 and ways to encourage and motivate students to learn to write code in Senior Forms. Students further developed logic thinking and reasoning skills through programming tasks. Students worked collaboratively in the team. Discipline and time management were developed through weekly training sessions.

Mr. Leung talked about the training for the Computer Programming Team and Computer Literacy Curriculum in Junior Forms. The school provided interesting tasks and a stimulating learning environment with the motto that "Learning Programming is FUN!" Without homework and exam pressure, students were allowed to choose from a wide variety of tasks to work on. Open-ended tasks provided the flexibility to meet students' individual needs. Peer influence was the key to motivate students to learn and grow together.

Apart from the teachers, our student, Poon Wing Sze shared about participating in the Hong Kong Olympiad in Informatics since S.3. She did not win any prize nor entered the Final Event in the first year. With hard work and encouragement from teachers and schoolmates, she got medals in consecutive years in S.4 and S.5. She became the only female Hong Kong representative to participate in National Olympiad in Informatics in Mianyang, Sichuan, in July 2016. The experience further broadened her horizons in programming and algorithm through competition with students from all over China.
