STEM Contest – Spaghetti Bridge

S1 students had an exciting STEM contest on 26th October, 2018.  The challenge was to witness their model bridges wrecked by weights.

In STEM lessons over the past two weeks, S1 students had been building mini bridges with spaghetti and hot glue.  Working in groups of four, they came up with innovative designs and translated these into 40 bridges of all shapes and sizes.  Many teams worked during breaks and lunchtime, producing structures that defied imagination.  There were fan-shaped designs, triangular constructions and mini-Tsing Ma Bridge.  Some had amusing names like “THANK 橋” etc.

The spaghetti bridges were proudly displayed in the hall on the day.  They were first judged based on visual appeal by teacher volunteers, and then were subject to a weight test.  With excitement and pain, S1 students watched their creations stretched beyond the breaking point.  Screams and laughter ran high in the hall.

A combination of physics and aesthetics, this is a fun-filled STEM challenge that is memorable for all participants.

Winning teams and designs:

1. The Most Good-Looking Bridge Award - 4隻海豹拍拍手

2. The Sturdiest Bridge Award - 確認過眼神我遇上對的人
