Globalization and Social Innovation Workshop by the CSD Department
The Citizenship and Social Development (CSD) Department invited Inter Cultural Education (ICE) to organize a Globalization and Social Innovation workshop for all S6 students on October 3, 2025. It began with a clip featuring Matt Friedman (an American human rights advocate with expertise in human trafficking and modern slavery) from the Mekong Club on modern slavery and supply chains. This was followed by a Human Library session in which students interviewed guests from different countries such as Bolivia, Ecuador, France, Ghana, India, Iran, Jordan, Pakistan, Ukraine, and Vietnam, about social issues in their countries caused by globalization, as well as the solutions attempted by their governments and / or the international community. After being introduced to some real-life solutions from Costa Rica, India, and Hong Kong, students were challenged to work in groups to come up with a social innovation that could solve or alleviate a social issue presented by one of the guests. Each group had to create a promotional poster and pitch their idea to the other groups. It was indeed a thought-provoking and eye-opening activity for all students. Rather than learning about economic globalization from a textbook, they had the opportunity to listen to real stories from our foreign guests and were challenged to think about what could be done to alleviate various problems. We hope that the values of the common good of humankind, human rights and responsibility and sustainability could be conveyed to students so that they could become informed and responsible global citizens.
