Sharing by Ms Chan Yeuk Yu on Cantonese opera
The Citizenship and Social Development (CSD) Department was delighted to welcome Ms Chan Yeuk Yu 陳若妤 (S6 Graduate, 2020) to speak with our S5 students on Cantonese opera during the CSD lesson. Yeuk Yu introduced students to various intangible cultural heritage elements of Hong Kong, with an emphasis on the unique background of Cantonese opera. She explained Cantonese opera’s distinctive roles in honoring gods, providing entertainment, and educating the public on moral lessons. To make this traditional Chinese art more appealing to young people, Yeuk Yu highlighted the fun and “mysterious” aspects of Cantonese opera, such as actors’ and actresses’ personal wardrobes (衣箱), make‑up techniques, costumes, special hairstyles, and accessories. Students had the opportunity to see, smell, and touch the items actresses use to fix their hairdos and hairpieces. In closing, Yeuk Yu shared her work in promoting Cantonese opera, aiming to pass this valuable tradition on to future generations and instill pride in this unique Chinese culture.
