Second Runner-Up in the "Build a Better Wanchai" Project

A total of 5 students from the STEM Team participated in the "Build a Better Wanchai" project (建「機」灣仔), organised by Wan Chai District and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department.  This initiative, aimed at optimizing community facilities through youth-led social innovation, included workshops on design thinking and STEAM activities.

To address the issues of unpleasant odours in the Wanchai Market, debris accumulation in drainage channels, and dripping ceilings in the underground parking lot, our team designed two innovative devices: the Ice Melter and the Garbage Pusher.  The Ice Melter is intended to assist shop owners in managing ice, dissolving it, and discharging it into the drainage system at room temperature.  This reduces problems caused by condensation, such as slippery floors, thereby lowering accident risks and ensuring the safety of the public.  Meanwhile, the Garbage Pusher effectively clears debris from the channels, including fish scales and food residue, which are often difficult to handle.

The team's hard work and creativity led them to win Second Runner-up in the design competition, allowing them to showcase their project at the award ceremony.  This achievement not only enhanced their understanding of electrical and mechanical safety but also encouraged collaboration for future community initiatives.  Additionally, they earned the opportunity to participate in an overseas study trip in February, where they will visit local innovative enterprises and gain insights into technology development.

These measures aim to improve air quality in the market, optimize the environment, and enhance the quality of life and health for the community.  This experience has significantly broadened their horizons and deepened their commitment to making a positive impact in their community.
