Assembly on Civic Education cum First Floor Plain Talk – Identity
Four Civic Education assistants and History students from Secondary 3 to 5 conducted an assembly in English on 19 Dec to analyse how Hong Kong people’s senses of identities are shaped by political, economic, social and historical factors. Globalization facilitates Hong Kong people’s realization and acceptance of their multiple identities.
1819 Choral Speaking Champion
3E received 1st place at the Choral Speaking Secondary 3 Girls Competition on 13 December with the performance of the poem “Of Course There was Nobody There” by Janis Priestly. It was a particularly special victory as the Hong Kong School Speech Festival celebrated its 70th anniversary. The adjudicator, Rosalind Taylor, commended the girls on their discipline and teamwork. In the morning assembly of 19 December, they were invited to perform to their fellow schoolmates. Teachers and students enjoyed the performance and their hard work was highly appreciated.
Good Class Scheme 2018 (Phase I)
With the mission to promote self-discipline and foster a sense of responsibility among students, the Good Class Scheme is carried out every year in two phases in the first term and in the second term. The scheme focuses on a number of disciplinary issues, such as classroom cleanliness, punctuality, and knowledge of the school rules etc. On 12 December, the results of the scheme were announced in the morning assembly with our Principal, Mr. Francis Kwan presentencing prizes to the winning classes. Adoption of New Winter Coats (Long & Short)
After various rounds of consultations with teachers, parents and students, a set of two newly designed winter coats (long and short) has been adopted and released recently for better protection from the cold. The design of the winter coats is a combination of lightweight materials, water resistant and multiple layers to protect and insulate against low temperatures. Meanwhile, Ying Wa heritage is also an important element for the design of the coats. The zipper puller is the shape of the coloured school badge of the traditional Ying Wa school coat. The responses from students are positive and many students reflected that the coats are more portable and functional. The slide fastener is also a good icon of the Ying Wa family.
Talk by Ms. Siposetu Sethu Mbuli
Thanks to the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) Leadership Institute, Ms. Siposetu Sethu Mbuli, the Co-founder of the organisation Love, This Skin and the recipient of the Queen’s Young Leaders Award 2018, was invited to deliver a talk on ‘Women Empowerment’ to our Form 4 students on 10th December.
Sethu, who grew up in South Africa with albinism, introduced her mission to help young girls suffering from albinism develop their sense of identity, build confidence and overcome social stigma. Her personal experiences inspired our students with the importance of treasuring our own story and embracing diversity.
JENESYS 2018
Our head girl, Lu Lok Yee of S.5, was selected to be one of the delegates to represent Hong Kong in the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths Programme (JENESYS). Initiated by the Japanese Government in 2007, JENESYS aims to promote mutual understanding among the East Asia region, and to deepen understanding of Japan. Participants visited high schools, science and history museums, and enjoyed a memorable night with homestay families in Tokyo, Shiga and Kyoto. The delegation was engaged in cultural performances, including dancing and singing in Putonghua and Japanese.
S.4 LS Workshop
The Liberal Studies (LS) Department invited Inter Cultural Education (ICE) to hold five identical Poverty Simulations “Mashanti” from December 2018 to January 2019 for all S.4 classes. Through professional guidance, genuine props and interactive activities, the issues of global poverty, unfair trade and social injustice could easily be delivered. All students were fully engaged in the role-play, discussion and sharing. It was particularly impressive that many students were actively engaged to share and raise a lot of challenging questions in discussions. Several even stayed behind to raise more in-depth questions and chat with the guest speakers. Overall, the learning atmosphere was very interactive, joyful and positive.
